OCD Ireland would like to draw your attention to the research project described below. We believe the research output of this project can make a real difference towards highlighting and reducing discrimination against sufferers of OCD, TTM and BDD as well as other mental health conditions in general. This is YOUR chance to have your say and help change public perception. We strongly encourage people to participate in this study.

The School of Nursing, Dublin City University in collaboration with Amnesty Ireland are conducting a research project on Mental Health and Discrimination. This project is investigating the experience of discrimination as reported by people with mental health difficulties in their daily lives. In particular it will examine overt and covert discrimination, self discrimination; and the impact of discrimination on participant's lives; identifying to what extent discrimination is related to their mental health difficulties. The project requires involvement of people who have or had mental health difficulties, as researchers and participants. This is in keeping with the research methodology Participatory Action Research. The research team are currently recruiting volunteers to take part in the study, which consists of a short face-to-face interview. If you are interested in hearing more about this study or think your might like to participate by sharing your experience, DCU would like to hear form you. Please note involvement in the study is peer-led, completely confidential and there are support networks in place for participants.

On Tuesday February 9th 2010, Prime Time, aired a segment involving interviews with people, who have had experience of Ireland's mental health system and its dilapidated institutions. The progam also features a segement which includes Minister John Moloney, Minister for Equality, Disability and Mental Health, and Dr Justin Brophy, President, The College of Psychiatry of Ireland. The segment discusses the Irish Government's plans for the mental health system.

      Stuck On Repeat

      Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz Special Guest Lecture ...

St Patrick's Hospital presented a special guest lecture 'The Mind and The Brain - How are they related?' from Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz M.D. Jeffrey M. Schwartz, a leading neuroscientist and Research Psychiatrist at UCLA School of Medicine, is a seminal thinker and researcher in the field of self-directed neuroplasticity. One of the most famous books he has authored is "Brain Lock: Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Behavior" (1997).

His major interest over the past two decades has been brain imaging/functional neuroanatomy and cognitive-behavioral therapy, with a focus on the pathological mechanisms and psychological treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive disorder (OCD).

This lecture took place on Thursday July 10th at 7pm in the Dean Swift Lecture Theatre, St Patrick's Hospital, James's St., Dublin 8. [more information]
