Mental Health Week (7th – 14th October 2006)...

A variety of events are to take place next month in venues in Limerick, Clare and north Tipperary to mark Mental Health Week. Events will include workshops, seminars, yoga and relaxation sessions, talks, walks and exhibitions. These will target the general public, health and education professionals, young people and community groups.

The overall theme for Mental Health Week 2006 is the practice of Mindfulness. This is a simple method, which teaches us to pay attention to our experience of life in the present moment. Mental Health Week was established in 2005 by Limerick Mental Health Association and this year it has been boosted by the involvement of Mental Health Associations throughout the Mid-West Region. The Associations are providing the key programmes and framework for the Week.They are working in partnership with second and third level educational bodies, community, voluntary and statutory services to provide a week long series of events promoting good mental health.

      Mental Health Week aims to:

• Emphasise the importance of good coping skills
• Highlight the link between physical and mental health
• Reach out to all age groups with a particular emphasis on young people
• Introduce techniques into educational and health settings
• Promote understanding and a positive attitude towards the word 'Mental'
• Highlight the work of voluntary, community and statutory services in the promotion of positive mental health
• Be an enjoyable and fun week

Mental Health Week is supported by the National Lottery, Mid West Mental Health Associations, HSE and Limerick’s Live 95FM.
